Name of The Experiments: Estimation of Scouring effect by column test.
1. Objective:
· To learn about the estimation process of scouring effect by column test.
· To learn about standard ranges of column test method in case of optimum scouring.
2. Theory:
Scouring is the pre-treatment process of wet processing technology. Scouring is the first stage of pre-treatment. Before dyeing or printing of textile materials must pass scouring process. Scouring is the process by which natural (oil, wax, gum, fat etc) as well as added (during fabrication process) impurities are removed completely as possible. Especially hydrophobic character which is present in the fiber of fabric is removed by this process. There are several methods to test optimum scouring effect on treated fabric. Column test is one of that, in this test method observer observe the absorbing ability of the material for certain time. The standard range of absorption is about 30-50mm.

3. Experimental Procedure:
Sample: 100% cotton knitted scoured fabric.

Process Flow Chart:
Collection of scoured sample.

Sample dimension modified to 18cm X 5cm
↓
Then immersed the samples 1cm from length side into 0.1% direct dye solution for 5 minute

Finally measure the colored absorbed distance

Process Description:
At first we need to collect suitable amount of scoured sample for test. Prepare the sample size into 18cm X 5cm. On the other hand we have to prepare 0.1% direct dye solution into beaker. Then we have to immersed 1cm (from the length side) of the scoured fabric into the solution with the help of stand & hold it for 5 minute. After 5 minute we have to observe the absorbed colored area.
Precautions:
o Taking chemicals as per recipe provided by the Instructor.
o Taking every weight of chemicals carefully.
5. Result & Discussion:
Discussion: We observed here the treated fabric absorbed dye solution and we measure the distance is about more than 3.5cm. We may say the fabric is well scoured.
6. Conclusion & Comments: By doing this experiment we have learned about the scouring process of cotton fabric and estimate the scouring by column test method. We are able to achieve standard scouring effect to the given sample but our sample dimension is not as standard as required due to some technical problems happen in our lab. Further we have to take proper dimension of sample for testing.
